The best way to clean your carpet
Although carpets completely change the outlook of your home, there is no doubt that they are extremely hard to clean. Carpets take the brunt of the dirtiness, be it from dust, mud, spills, hair; you name it. Even if you vacuum your carpet regularly, there is a chance that some stains might accumulate, and unfortunately, your regular vacuum run can't remove those. In that case, here is a guide to some additional ways you can clean your carpet.
Routine cleaning
For routine cleaning, your main priority is getting rid of the dust and dirt on the surface. Not only does it ruin the look of your carpet, but it makes your carpet more vulnerable to wear and tear as well. As you vacuum, make sure you go over high-traffic areas more than once to ensure that you've removed all the dirt. For lint that isn't being picked up by the vacuum, go with a lint roller in areas where lint seems to be accumulated. Every month, sprinkle baking soda over your carpet and let it sit for a bit - this will ensure that your carpet doesn't absorb too many oily stains.
Cleaning stains
As mentioned earlier, some stains are too permanent for vacuum cleaning. Here, the key is not to let the stain sit for too long. When you see a stain forming, use a paper towel to blot the excess moisture. Remember not to use a colored cloth because that will only accentuate the stain further. Alternatively, if you are faced with a mud stain instead of a runny stain, use a piece of card stock to scrape off the solid part. Make sure you don't scrape too much, or you might damage your rug, but try to remove all the solid excess before you tackle the stain itself. Common products used to remove such stains are bleach, rubbing alcohol, and laundry soap bars.
Recipes for cleaning carpets
Besides the obvious products, you can try some home remedies to clean carpet stains. Here are some of the tried and tested ones!
#1: Water and vinegar recipe
In a spray bottle, mix three parts of water and one part of white vinegar. Depending on the size of your carpet, increase the amount according to the same ratio. Spray the solution onto the affected area and keep it for five minutes. Don't spray excessively but, spray enough to dampen the area. Then, use a cloth to blot away the stain.
#2: Baking soda and salt recipe
Mix equal parts baking soda and salt, and keep a spray bottle filled with cold water with you. Sprinkle the mixture onto the affected areas of the carpet, and spray afterward. Then, use a scrub brush to work the mixture into the carpet. It should loosen the soil enough for you to scrape away the stain.
